If you’ve spent any time on Texas back roads, you’ve seen trucks with heavy steel guards bolted to the front. A lot of folks call that a cattle guard. It’s the same thing as a grille guard, brush guard or bumper guard: a steel frame that protects the front of your truck.
What Does a Cattle Guard on a Truck Do?
A cattle guard shields your grille, headlights and front end from the things that hit trucks out here: brush, fence posts, deer and livestock. For ranchers, hunters and anyone who drives rural roads at night, it can be the difference between a scare and a costly repair.
Types of Cattle Guards
- Grille guards mount to the frame and sit in front of your factory bumper, covering the grille and often the headlights.
- Replacement bumpers take the place of your factory bumper entirely. They’re heavier-duty and often have a guard built in.
- Bull bars are a smaller center bar that protects the middle of the front end.
How to Choose a Cattle Guard
Start with how you use your truck. If you’re mostly on pavement and want protection from deer, a grille guard is usually enough. If you’re working cattle, pushing through brush or driving pastures every day, a full replacement bumper holds up better.
Match it to your truck, too. Ranch Hand, for example, makes a heavier-duty Legend series and a lighter-weight Summit series, and not every series is made for every truck. We check what fits your year, make and model before recommending one.
Also check your front sensors. Many newer trucks have parking sensors and cameras up front. We carry sensor-compatible options, so you don’t have to give up those features.
